Why use a calf coat (also referred to as a calf jacket of calf blanket)? 

Your veterinarian will probably tell you to feed your calf more in cold weather than in warm weather.  Why? because the calf needs more energy i n the winter to maintain its body temperature.  This is where calf coats, (calf jackets or blankets) come in.  For its first six weeks of life, a calf does not have enough body fat to maintain its own body temperature.  It requires more energy then when air temperatures are above 50F.  Calves were not made to born in the winter.  We breed cows all year long, so we can have milk produced all year long, but that is not the way mother nature planned it.
